for a Pictorial Language
In 1994, Marie-Denise Douyon
teaches visual art in elementary schools and high schools.
The artworks of this period, marked with vitality display
all the chromatic luxuriance of Haiti.
The settings are covered of
floral ornaments, of geometric patterns and arabesques. The
characters of Creole and African inspiration are taken by
surprise in action and the simplified shapes accentuate the
hieratic attitudes of the figures. Daily "heroic" effort,
and concentration emanate from the models in her paintings.
Usual objects glued on the surface reinforce the aspect of
traditional trades found in the craftsmen she portrays.
During this most fulfilling
and productive period, the artist participates in several
group and solo exhibitions in Montreal, as well as abroad.
