The Interior Exile
In 1991, a young
woman full of disappointed dreams lands in Montreal from Haiti.
Painting becomes her outlet to release all the horrors and
demons entrenched in her soul. The pallet is composed of bright
pastels that are applied as thin washes. However, the drawing
predominates.
Tinted images of distress and nostalgia,
sadness and anguish, evoking loneliness and drift appear.
In a figurative style, painting on large formats, she chooses
to honor the figure of the woman. Tirelessly, she paints and
depicts the pillars of Creole society; women of modest origin,
women brutalized by the hardship of an existence, women who
face up life with courage and pride.
Her work, tinged with spontaneity and improvisation,
reveals an unconscious message. In a stubborn search for emotional
resonance, the artist seems to penetrate the secret life of
her model and slowly the quiet pain of reclusion emerges.
