The accolade of bravery is achieved on the battlefield but not on a recreational bench.

Haoussa (Nigeria)

True bravery is displayed outside when a real challenge may be offered by others who are not members of one's family. Even though bravery is a highly desired quality in the traditional society; it must be displayed within the right context.

The proverb can be used to put a "big brother" who is fond of bullying his brothers and sisters, but is afraid to face outsiders, to shame. It is the equivalent proverb of "The cricket says that a man does not shout in his room".
